We are always looking for volunteers to help with fieldwork, particularly in capture and release of diamondback terrapins in order to better understand their population dynamics.

Our field site is at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. It can be reached by car, by bus (Q21 or Q53), or subway (Rockaway A train to Broad Channel Station). The National Parks website has more detailed information.

All volunteers must sign the liability form and media release form. We have copies onsite, but you can also print them out and bring them with you.

Fieldwork can be challenging, especially in the heat of summer. You should plan on being in the field for about 6 hours. Please note that bathrooms are only available when the visitor center is open, which is Friday to Monday (10a-4p).

Below is a list of what each volunteer should bring:

  • Sunscreen

  • Water (at least 1.5 liters)

  • Bug spray

  • Any medicine that you require

  • Shoes that can get wet

  • Hat and sunglasses

  • Comfortable light clothing

  • Lunch (nothing that spoils in the heat) and a snack

Not necessary, but helpful:

  • Phone charger

  • Binoculars
